The 30-year involvement of ExxonMobil in Grand Prix racing has seen it partner with three multi-race and championship winning teams. The company has worked with McLaren Mercedes since 1995 and the 2008 season sees the continuation of its integral technology relationship with Vodafone McLaren Mercedes through the development of lubricants and fuel for the race car.

Mobil 1 lubricants must:
- withstand engine forces 8,500 times greater than the force of gravity
- perform above 300 °C (hot enough to melt tin and close to the melting point of lead)
- protect engines during the 67,000 kilometres covered during a race season
